Many LED manufacturers are pulling off lumen and pumping up the kelvin to make the lights “brighter” , that’s truly not good.
Here are the results of a government study showing higher color temps interfere with sleep. Why does it seem like no one knows or cares about this? Sources are selling 5000k lights for homes with no qualms about what it will do to the people who live there.
Study: In order to examine whether the spectral compositions of light source may affect sleep quality, sleep architecture under different color temperatures of light sources was evaluated. Seven healthy males were exposed to the light sources of different color temperatures (3000 K, 5000 K and 6700 K) for 6.5 h before sleep. The horizontal illuminance level was kept at 1000 lux. Subjects slept on a bed in near darkness (< 10 lux) after extinguishing the light, and polysomnograms recorded the sleep parameters. In the early phase of the sleep period, the amount of stage-4 sleep (S4-sleep) was significantly less under the higher color temperature of 6700 K compared with the lower color temperature of 3000 K. Present findings suggest that light sources with higher color temperatures may affect sleep quality in a view that S4-sleep period is important for sleep quality
This article Shows How LEDs Are Changing Urban Light Pollution
Report done by the Istanbul Technical University and Edienhoven Univ. of Technology, They have concluded the Blue in the 5000K, agreeing with the study from the University of Madrid, will damage the retina over time. There are 4 different studies, 4 Universities, from 4 different countries coming up with the same conclusion.
this article, by Ian Ashdown is relevant too. relates to blue content in relation to light pollution and circadian disruption in the natural world:
Here’s a recent post that outlining the importance of engaging the public in decisions regarding LED streetlight color temperature. Far too many transportation staff don’t consider the public and their preferences.
There is to some degree, a lack of Integrity with some sales people. They will sell you anything to make a buck. but responsible people will make the right choice if they understand what they are being sold, whether it be public or residential. To sell anything and not inform the buyer of any hazards or negative effects the product may come with, is just unthinkable, but we do have a conscientious and we always try do the right thing for my customer.
Go to this link. You will find the SPD analysis has already been done for hundreds of lights, watts, different CCT, etc. You will find valuable data here.
You will see the Blue in the LED is far more prominent in most cases.
